Driving me bonkers

21 March

Spring is here the weather is good so thought I'd test the adjusted carbs out.  15 miles tootle round the lanes, visited Ian in Barnard Castle he was busy prepping his Manx Norton for Croft on Saturday.  Was pleased to see the Guzzi going after his help back in the days of reassembly.

Bike goes very well indeed, starts off the bat, ticks over quiet, pulls well, feels smooth no flat spots no hesitation or fluffing on pick up, no missing or spitting, holds a neutral line in the bends, brakes great. beginning to feel at one again.

Good news
Plugs a much better colour, right maybe just a bit rich left looks fine.  Right a bit gappy so adjusted back to spec.

Bad News

See Pic.

Pro tem in desperation have fitted an o-ring and a crush washer

Don't hold out much hope.

Carb tune

18 March

Plugs still v  sooty after test ride, I've already moved needles down by one notch since returned from NBS.

So decided to check air screw settings.

Start position
RH 3/4 turn out
LH 1/2 turn out.
As these are air screws very definitely on the rich side.

Ran each cylinder in turn and adjusted air screw to get optimum tick over
Finish settings
RH 2 turns out
LH 1.75 turns out.
Idle screws both 3/4 turns out.

Will see how it goes next time out, when the weather is better to spend more time on fine tuning.

Bevel Buffing

7 March 2019

Replacement drive arrives from NBS.  The casing is a bit untidy and evidence of a previous owner using a rotary steel brush.  Set about tidying up with help from a borrowed Dremmel and kit.  Decided to fit it to swing arm while work in progress, easier when its held in one place, exhaust and shock removed to help with access.

Used the Dremel on some parts, but mostly 600 and 1000 wet and dry, then steel wool with T cut, then Autosol.   Some of the pitting too deep to realistically remove, looks just fine now though, perfection not the goal.

18 March

Filled with oil, everything tight!  Wheel, shocks, brake, exhausts all fitted and tightened up.

Test ride curtailed by sudden rain, but no leaks at all after six miles.  Phew!

Marks at 12 oclock too deep to remove

Looks more than good enough for an old 'un
